Dominie selected to first all-star team

Shayne Dominie, a 16 year old youth from Harbour Breton, was one of the best hockey players at the Chronicle Herald 2nd annual East Coast IceJam that was held at the BMO Centre in Bedford, Nova Scotia from January 8 to 12.

Shayne Dominie, a Level 11 student at King Academy, was selected to the First-All Star team from 19 squads at the Chronicle Herald East Coast IceJam that was held in Nova Scotia from January 8 to 12.

Dominie plays defense for the Central IcePak, one of the four Newfoundland teams in the tourney. A total of 19 major midget teams, ages 15 to 17, from all across Atlantic Canada participated in the fast-paced event.

A number of Major Bantam teams, ages 13 to 14, also saw action in the tournament.

Dominie helped his team to first place following regular round-robin action as the IcePak had the only perfect record, 3 and 0, in the category.

The IcePak carried their strong game into the first round of the play-off section as they defeated the Cape Breton West Islanders 6 to1.

Their second play-off match saw the IcePak and the Moncton Flyers tied at 2 to 2 following three periods of exciting hockey. The IcePak gave it their best shot but the Flyers came away with a 3 to 2-overtime win.

Dominie selected to First All-Star Team

Although the quarter loss to the Flyers was disappointing, another upside to the overall tournament was that the 18 scouts from Quebec, who selected the First and Second All-Star teams and the individual awards, seriously noted Dominie and two of his teammates.

While Dominie was selected as a First All-Star defenseman, his teammate Jordan Maher was chosen as a forward to the First All- Star team.

Another Central IcePak member, Noah Weir, was picked as the Second All- Star team goalie.

Jordan Maher was selected as the Best Forward in the individual awards while the best overall defenseman was Luke Green from Newbridge.

Don Power is an official with the IceJam tournament.

Power said that the East Coast IceJam, along with the Monctonian, is a showcase where young players from Atlantic Canada are given a second opportunity throughout a year to display their talent to scouts from Quebec, various NHL teams and universities and colleges from the United States.

“These tournaments are a good opportunity for our best players in Atlantic Canada to showcase themselves for whatever purpose they want to pursue,” Power said.

“This particular event is especially important as, previously, scouts only got to see our players once a year, at the Monctonian in November.

“With this tournament, the scouts can now see the same players again in January and see how they may have progressed and where they may go from here.

“It’s quite a pat on the back for Shayne to be picked to the First All-Star team by the Quebec scouts.”

Dominie said, “The IceJam was a good tournament, as I got to meet some new players and to play some great hockey with my teammates.

“It was a special honour to be named to the first-all star team and to be chosen as the second defenseman overall by the Quebec scouts.”
