Western Kings have respectable showing at IceJam

CORNER BROOK  The Colemans Western Kings can feel good about their performance against the best in Atlantic Canada.

The Kings finished with a 2-2 record overall at the 2014 The Chronicle Herald East Coast IceJam Hockey Tournament at the BMO Centre in Halifax over the weekend. The tournament serves as one of the showcase events major midget hockey franchises in Atlantic Canada participate in on an annual basis to guage the progress of their respective franchises.

The road to gold was stymied with a 4-2 loss to the Charlottetown Mark’s Work Wearhouse Major Midget Islanders of Prince Edward Island in the Round of 16 playoffs Saturday afternoon at the BMO Centre. The Kings finished with a record of two wins and one defeat in round-robin play in the 19-team tournament.

The showdown against the Islanders proved to be an interesting matchup as neither team could thread the needle in the first 40 minutes.

The snipers took control in the third with Cody McPhee scoring two goals, including one on the power play, to lead the charge for the Islanders.

Nick Bouchey and Alex Hambly also scored for the Islanders.

Brady Griffin-Hefford and Nathan Ellsworth dented the twine for the Kings.

Halifax McDonald’s Major Midgets 4, Colemans Western Kings 2

Luc Poirier paved the way for the victors with a goal and two helpers, while Jordan Yochoff shared the spotlight with a goal and an assist.

Jordan Bezanson and Justin Doiron rounded out the scoring for the winners.

Jamie Penney and Tommy  Ryan scored for the Kings in the team’s tournament opener Thursday afternoon.

Colemans Western Kings 3, Newbridge Academy Gladiators 1

Derian Gould, Jordan King and Dylan Sceviour scored second-period goals for the Kings in their second game Thursday to improve to 1-1.

Luke Green scored an unassisted marker for the Gladiators to spoil the shutout bid of Kings puckstopper Luke House.

Colemans Western Kings 4, South Shore Mustangs 1

The Kings broke open a 1-1 game with unanswered goals in the final stanza to push its record to 2-1 and a berth in the Round of 16 playoffs.

Brandon Sexton’s power-play marker at 13:50 of the middle third period proved to be the game-winning goal in Friday’s victory at the BMO Centre.

Derian Gould and Jordan Richards had power-play goals for the Kings, while Brady Griffin-Hefford scored with 17 seconds left in regulation to seal the deal for the Kings.

Mitch Baker scored for the Mustangs on a power-play for the only scoring play of the opening stanza.
