HAMMOND PLAINS, NS, January 10, 2013 - Three provinces walked away with victories in the first four games on Thursday at the East Coast Ice Jam. Newfoundland claimed two wins, PEI one and Nova Scotia one. New Brunswick didn’t play an early game.

The Valley Wildcats shut out the Western NL Kings 6-0; the St. John’s Maple Leafs edged the Cole Harbour Wolf Pack 2-1; tjhe Cornwall Thunder downed the Pictou County Weeks 4-1 and the ZSt. John’s Privateers doubled up 4-2 on the South Shore Mustangs.

Valley led from the first period on, up 2-0 after the first 20 minutes and built to a 6-0 lead at the end of the second. Grant Jones scored the first two goals for the Wildcats, the first on a power play. Duncan McFie, Nicholas Blanchard and Robert Patterson each scored singles.

Brett Tidman had a pair of assists while Mikail Parker, Blanchard, Lukas Kane, Jones, John Deacon and Jacob McNutt had singletons. Justin Ritchie made 14 saves in recording the shutout. Daniel McCarthy took the loss making 26 saves.

The Maple Leafs were tried 1-1 with the Cole Harbour Wolf Pack after the first but got another in the second to lead 2-1 and that’s the way the game ended. The Wolf Pack actually got on the board first on a goal by Matthew Morefield assisted by Ryan Yould but the Maple Leafs came back with an unassisted effort by Matthew Smith to tie up the game.

Chris Mallard got the go ahead goal in the second with help from Bobby Upshall and Riley Baggs. Josh Carey was the winner in net while Roman Bengert took the loss.

It was the third period before either team could break the tieless score between the Weeks and Thunder but the first goal opened the floodgates and in just 20 minutes the Thunder scored four time for the win. Ryan Steele, Blaze Bridges, Brock Richard and Jonathan Arsenault scored. Arsenault’s was an empty netter.

Curtis MacGregor had a pair of assists for the Thunder with Bailey Webster, Parker Ronahan, Arsenault and Brandon Williams had single helpers. Cody Johnston scored for the Weeks assisted bny Mark Vokey and Luke Melanson.

ALex Kelly took the win in net with Luke Melanson tagged for the loss.

The fourth game of the day was a little closer with both the Privateers and Mustangs ending the first knotted at one apiece. The Privateers pulled ahead in the second to lead 2-1 and scored another pair in the third while holding the Mustangs to a singleton to win 4-2.

Lee Dower, Zachary Tucker, Lucas Lush and Peter Kavanaugh scored for St. John’s. Assisted by Marc Vokey with a pair and Andrew Haley, Kavanaugh and Brad Mitchelmore collecting singles.

Jordan Messenger scored both of the Mustangs goals, the second unassisted. He was assisted by Bradon Donaldson and Alex Nauss on the first. Mitchell Puddester took the win in net with 18 saves. Cory Peterson made 26 saves in the loss.
